Dr. Haakanson accepted his position to serve on the Alaska Native Science Commission in January 2002. He is presently the Executive Director of the Alutiiq Museum in Kodiak, Alaska. He became the director in September of 2000 after completing his Ph.D. in Anthropology at Harvard University. He serves as the museum's lead spokesperson and fund raiser. He works with the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation board to enhance charitable giving, increase collaboration with Kodiak's Alutiiq villages, manages the museum staff, and represents the museum at public functions and professional meetings.

Dr. Haakanson enjoys traveling, working and sharing Alutiiq crafts with the youth in the villages on Kodiak Island. He currently serves on the Alaska State Council on the Arts and has been collaborating with European museums on several projects, sharing his knowledge of Alutiig culture and heritage in Alaska.
