Paul John is a Native elder from Toksook Bay, distinguished
by his firsthand knowledge of natural science from a Yupíik world
view and perspective. His knowledge of cultural traditions,
coupled with his effective educational experience with both young
and old people, has ensured that Yupíik cultural knowledge is incorporated
in the educational system in the villages of the lower Kuskokwim.
He has worked with regional leaders to have the
local perspective and world view made part of resource management
plans being reviewed by the state and federal officials, and has
used his experience to influence western scientific systems and
methodologies that manage the resources he and his community depend
upon.
